Current Outlook - Semiconductor
Markets
Semiconductor Markets – Worldwide
With over one third of
the year complete, semiconductor markets continue to make
progress, with analog leading the way. PCs continue to perform
marginally well, considering the first and second quarters
are normally seasonally weak in terms of sales. Large distribution
customers have reported healthy inventory levels, even for
the new Hewlett Packard. Concerns remain in the data networking
markets, but backlog is building, a critical benchmark in
terms of overall industry trends. Capital expenditures remain
frozen, as operators continue to experience contracting revenue
results over consecutive quarters...

Outlook - Semiconductor Markets
Semiconductor Markets – Worldwide
The semiconductor market
continues the road to recovery, posting a 5% consecutive
increase in revenue for the second quarter. The economy has
improved, regardless of waning consumer confidence in the
financial markets. Government spending, provoked by the September
11th attacks, has stirred up the electronics industry. Lest
they lose their shirts in the stock market, consumers have
opted to invest in non-traditional prospects, like real estate,
education, and home entertainment. While the news reports
continue to caution about “celebrating
too early”, new laptop computers are accompanying many
students as they head back to classrooms... |

Outlook - Semiconductor Markets
Semiconductor Markets – Worldwide
This is a slow recovery
year for the technology sectors, but not necessarily unusual
or unpredictable. Each period of fundamental growth has always
been preceded by significant immobility, a time when new
technologies are perfected and infrastructure is put in place.
While there is much debate about what killer application
will drive the next boom, there is not much argument about
the upcoming growth cycle... |

Outlook - Semiconductor Markets
Semiconductor Markets – Worldwide
Despite a rising inclination
of cynicism regarding possible recovery, the semiconductor
market continues to advance out of the trough with a 4% increase
in total revenue up from July (or a 2.2% increase using a
three month moving average). Healthy markets include mixed
signal, power management, DSP, and ASICs. Trouble continues
for PLDs, a market that accommodates the communications infrastructure
segment. With the exception of DSPs, which showed 6% growth
on a three month moving average, digital products showed
marginal improvement...

Outlook - Semiconductor Markets
Semiconductor Markets – Worldwide
We all remain tolerant,
hoping for a continuing trend of momentum for industry recovery,
but drawn-out and stagnating market conditions continue to
foster pessimism. According to the latest revenue figures,
the typically strong seasonal period for analog ICs was marginally
successful at best...
