| Abstract Flash memory accounted for 8 percent of the total $277 billion semiconductor industry in 2008, and is expected to post higher than average growth rates of 18 percent annually. With demand for units shipped increasing at 21 percent annually and ASPs continually falling due to increased wafer size the entire market is poised for strong sales growth potential. Because of its advantages, Flash has quickly become the preferred memory in many portable consumer and computer applications and accounted for over $23 billion in sales for 2008, with only analog, logic, DRAM and MPUs accounting for more in total sales. The immense popularity of these products has led to impressive growth of 17 percent annually which has outpaced every other semiconductor category and made Flash one of the most profitable categories in the industry. Growth is driven in the Flash memory market by the communications segment which accounts for over one third of total Flash usage. Consumer and computer markets also attributed to worldwide sales of Flash with 26 percent and 22 percent of the overall market respectively. Flash is expected to continue its meteoric rise as lowering average selling prices (ASPs) have caused demand to grow dramatically thanks to more applications that can utilize the memory in their designs. Databeans predicts that a 2 percent annual fall in ASP, combined with a 21 percent average annual growth of units shipped, will lead to a healthy industry with room for continued expansion.
