2009 Automotive Semiconductors Market Research Report
Abstract
The global automotive industry is currently in a state of crisis. The trouble seems to have begun in the United States as a result of the financial issues there, including a massive credit crunch, and the turmoil then spread to other markets such as Japan and Western Europe. As a result of widespread reductions in consumer spending and financing difficulties for consumers, the automobile manufacturers are stuck with overcapacity and excess supply, still producing far more vehicles then will be sold in 2009.

The automotive electronics market is being driven by several factors. A few would include increasing global competition, longer vehicle life (more upgrade possibilities), consumer and regulatory demands for more safety systems, the need for greater fuel efficiency, and growing demand for new in-vehicle entertainment devices. These trends all point toward increasing automotive electronics density and complexity, which lead to higher levels of components integration and more silicon content. So as the number of components increases, space requirements are shrinking. Efficiency thus becomes more critical.

Automotive semiconductor products are found in multiple systems - from the powertrain and safety applications to cockpit electronics. Databeans predicts that the market for semiconductors in automotive applications is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 8.5 percent, and should reach $22.7 billion by 2014. The fastest-growing segments include optoelectronics, sensors, logic, and processors. Analog and microcontrollers are the largest segments, with market shares of 29 percent and 24 percent respectively.
