2010 DRAM Market Research Report
Abstract
Commodity memory ICs, especially DRAM, represent one of the largest, most lucrative, and also one of the most volatile segments in the entire semiconductor industry. Because DRAM is an integral component in nearly every product in the computer market, as well as numerous applications in high volume consumer electronics and mobile phones, overall consumer demand directly affects pricing and consumption in the DRAM space.

DRAM prices fell dramatically on an annual basis from 2007 through 2009. This was partly thanks to chipmakers continuing to add additional production capacity. This flooded the market with DRAM chips, causing prices to drop significantly. Although this price erosion hurt overall profitability, chipmakers continued to aggressively drop prices in order to gain market share over competitors. Further advances in DRAM manufacturing techniques reduced costs even further. Eventually, due to macroeconomic forces in the form of the recession and declining consumer demand for very low margin DRAM chips, the market reached a point of critical inventory overstock, where suppliers were forced to sell product at a loss just to move inventory.

Going into the first half 2010 the DRAM industry bounced back with incredible demand, built on the momentum it had accrued in the fourth quarter of 2009 and earlier. However, thanks to limited manufacturing capacities which were slashed during the recession and difficulties with new process migrations, the second half of 2010 has seen DRAM supplies fall way below burgeoning demand. In response, suppliers have been scrambling to bring production back online to serve this exploding market.

Databeans predicts that DRAM will experience the strongest rebound of any semiconductor category this year, growing 71 percent from $22.4 in global 2009 sales to $38.4 billion in 2010. Over the next five years this segment will continue to outpace the entire semiconductor industry as a whole, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13 percent and reaching $69.3 billion by 2015.
