2010 Semiconductors in Mobile Phones Market Research Report
Abstract
In becoming the most widespread technology product on earth, the mobile phone has positioned itself as the most indispensible category for the semiconductor industry. As new regional markets and new generations of feature rich phones continue to accelerate sales, this will remain the fastest growing IC category as a whole.

Databeans divides all mobile phone semiconductors into two general categories. The first includes all general purpose or multi-market semiconductors that are designed using a "standard cell" approach and can be found in numerous products outside of the wireless industry. Examples include memory, discretes, logic, optoelectronics, standard linear, standard analog (such as power, amplifiers, data converters, and interface), and application processors.

Meanwhile, wireless specific semiconductors are ASSPs that are limited to mobile applications only. Some examples include special purpose MCUs, RF analog devices, DSPs, and logic. Unlike many industries that consume almost exclusively either standard products or ASSPs, mobile handsets require a considerable number of semiconductor chips because of their reliance on both categories.

Major product markets within wireless specific include logic and analog, which combined, account for 87 percent of total application specific revenue. While wireless specific will grow at a healthy 11 percent CAGR over the next several years, multimarket products are still considered the higher growth area. Databeans projects this segment will reach $28.7 billion in 2010 and will grow at an impressive annual rate of 15 percent on average over the forecasted period.
