2011 Semiconductors in Automotive Applications Market Research Report
Abstract
The challenging economic conditions of the last couple of years served to create an environment in which automotive manufacturers needed to evolve in order to survive and maintain market share. Production needed to become more efficient, and there were also layoffs of personnel, but there were changes in the marketplace as well. The downturn was an opportunity for the automakers to reevaluate performance standards related to both quality and productivity. Also, they needed to improve their vehicles in order to satisfy higher standards for safety, fuel efficiency, and in-vehicle technologies.

Over the next several years, the automotive industry is expected to become increasingly important
to semiconductor manufacturers. This would come as a result of the wide range and greater number of emerging applications for motor vehicles. These include safety and driver assistance features related to airbags, collision and lane departure warnings, various types of driver monitoring devices, comfort and control functions, infotainment, telematics, and the increasingly popular spectrum of hybrid-electric technologies.

Databeans predicts that the market for semiconductors in automotive applications is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 8 percent, and should reach $36.4 billion by 2016. The fastest-growing segments include sensors, optoelectronics, analog, and microcontrollers. Analog and microcontrollers are the largest segments with market revenue shares of 28 percent and 23 percent respectively.
