2011 Sensors and MEMS Market Research Report
Abstract
The market for Sensors and MEMS devices can be considered a high-growth industry and is expected to increase penetration in automobiles, computers, and most significantly, portable products such as media players, tablet PCs, and smartphones. Databeans projects this market will reach nearly $11.1 billion in global revenue for the year 2011.

In general, packaging has had the biggest effect on the final cost of Sensors and MEMS in recent years and as a result has become a primarily focus. Product packaging, combined with tests, represents nearly 60 percent of the device's total cost. The continued hunt for cheaper standardized packages that do not compromise product performance has become a central focus for designers here.

The year 2009 was difficult for several MEMS manufacturers, but 2010 saw a major return to growth for the entire industry. Going into 2011, global sales of both Sensors and MEMs are projected to reach nearly $11.1 billion in global revenue. Over the next five years both sales and shipments are expected to experience average annual growth of 12 percent. Meanwhile, average selling prices will grow just slightly.

In particular, MEMS foundries exited from the crisis faster than other segments. This is the result of more system manufacturers that have ceased much of their internal MEMS manufacturing, rapidly increasing the outsourcing of MEMS production. Due to a rapid influx of new demand, MEMS foundries remain extremely active at the moment. This growth helped to attract new players into the MEMS foundry business, such as UMC and TSMC, for example. The MEMS and Sensors industries are expected to remain highly profitable over the next several years as OEMs develop new ways to package and integrate MEMS devices into existing systems.
