The Communications market is probably the single most important area of opportunity for the semiconductor industry; and Communications is the largest application market for analog components.  There was a time when a statement similar to this was made in reference to the computer market, and while that market is still the largest for semiconductors, communications has been outperforming the rest of the field, in terms of revenue growth, and it will continue to accelerate.

The market for analog integrated circuits in the communications market amounted to just under $13 billion in 2005. Databeans estimates that about 75 percent of this revenue was contributed by special purpose communications analog, including products such as analog baseband chips, transceivers, and supporting products used in a wireless or wired signal chain. Communications analog revenue is estimated to be growing at 16 percent annually on average. The market could approach $24 billion in five years. For 2006, and into the near future, expect communications analog products revenue to be higher in communications and consumer segments especially, driven by the increased demand from portable electronics, 3G handsets, network upgrades, and by increasing consumption by the Asia Pacific region.

This new study from Databeans describes in detail, the current market conditions for communications electronics and communications analog products used in these devices.  Regional forecasts are presented along with consumption and production forecasts by communications analog sub-segments, such as mobile phones, infrastructure, Bluetooth and other short range technologies, GPS, cordless phones, and wired communications.  Application device shipment forecasts are included in the consumption analysis.  Communications analog suppliers are discussed and market share presented for performance during 2005 by region and by sub-segment.

Other significant findings available in this report:

  • Worldwide communications semiconductor revenue will reach close to $70 billion this year
  • Asia Pacific is the fastest growing region for communications analog with a CAGR% of 20%
  • Communications analog used in mobile phones is expected to reach over $15 billion by 2011
  • STMicroelectronics leads the market in revenue share for communications analog, followed by Philips Semiconductors and Infineon Technologies
