Second only to the wireless communications market in terms of new semiconductor revenue growth, the consumer electronics market will continue to be an attractive opportunity for IC suppliers over the next five years. Consumer electronics is driving demand for semiconductors, in ways similar to today’s communications market, and similar to the computer market of the 80s. Legacy electronics are rapidly being replaced by digital flat panel screen TVs, video recorders, digital cameras, and more. And outside the audio/video space, consumer products are continuing to incorporate more semiconductors for efficient power management and human interface. Such products include home appliances, toys, tools, and environmental controls.
An important component of the consumer semiconductor market is analog. Total analog consumption in the consumer segment reached over $6 billion in 2005. Over half of this revenue is contributed by special purpose devices that are used in the front and back end signal conditioning of digital consumer applications. This study focuses on the market for application specific consumer analog which consists of audio products, such as class-D amplifiers and audio DACs, video products, and other consumer special purpose analog.
