In terms of the military and aerospace market, electronics is one of the few segments that has not yet reached a mature stage, which indicates a favorable outlook for semiconductor suppliers. The Databeans forecast for military and aerospace semiconductors expects 2006 to be a higher growth year for this market, with revenue likely to reach $2.46 billion - a 5 percent increase over last year.
The leading producer of military and aerospace semiconductors is by far the Americas region, which produces 53 percent of the industry revenue share. This makes sense because global spending on defense is dominated by the Americas with 45 percent share, followed by Europe with 15 percent, Russia with 7 percent, China with 6 percent, Japan with 5 percent and the rest of the world making up 22 percent.
This study discusses the chip market for products used in military and aerospace applications. Geographical markets are covered as well as product markets including sensors, optoelectronics, discretes, analog, logic, MPUs, DSPs, MCUs and memory. Major OEMs are discussed and applications including radar equipment, thermal imagers, electronic countermeasures, and more are described.
Significant findings include:
– Global spending on military and aerospace will exceed $1 trillion again in 2006, with the US alone contributing about a
44 percent share.
– The industrial market for semiconductors reached $18 billion in 2005.
– Military and aerospace products constitute 13 percent of the industrial market for semiconductors.
– Worldwide revenue from military and aerospace chips is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of
3 percent from 2006 through 2011.
– Worldwide revenue from military and aerospace chips was reported at $2.3 billion in 2005.
