| Abstract |
MEMS technology has been around
for a very long time, with the concept originating sometime
in the 1950's. MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS)
simply means that the IC includes an added mechanical
aspect or function. These devices can be used in a variety
of applications to detect almost any kind of energy transfer. |
| The largest application segments are
inkjet printer heads, followed by optical components used
in television and networks, other consumer applications,
and automotive applications that use pressure sensors,
gyroscopes, and accelerometers. This is a market that is
expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 20
percent over the next five years, due to higher consuming
applications emerging from the communications market, such
as cell phones, and the high growth seen in automotive
applications such as with airbag systems and tire pressure
sensors. |
