Abstract

Databeans estimates that communications semiconductor revenue will amount to over $72 billion for this year, and grow to a size of almost $128 billion by the end of the forecast period. Over the next five years, the growth rate for communications market semiconductors will average 12 percent per year for revenue. Revenue from the communications market segment constitutes 26 percent of the global semiconductor market.

Most communications market demand for semiconductors is coming from the wireless and wired broadband segments. There is a trend toward consolidation in the market, as operators merge with each other due to competition and market pressures. A similar trend is occurring now with communications chip providers, as they too move toward consolidation in an effort to more effectively serve the industry as a whole.
Western Europe, Japan and South Korea are saturated markets in terms of wireless penetration rates, and in the U.S. wireless penetration has now exceeded 80 percent. These are all considered matured markets for wireless, and revenue growth is therefore slowing down in those regions. However, there is still significant growth occurring in the so-called emerging regions of the world, such as in rural China, and in Latin America, due to demand coming from new subscribers.
Economic conditions and higher inflation both in the U.S. and elsewhere might start to have an impact upon replacement handset sales, especially with regard to the higher-priced 3G models. Consumers could become less likely to upgrade to the latest model handsets. Nevertheless, new phones will be available in the market this year, such as the 3G Apple iPhone, and competing models from other manufacturers.
