Abstract
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has projected lower revenue growth in consumer electronics for this year, which corresponds to the current Databeans forecast for the market. For the U.S. market in particular, the possibility, or perhaps the eventual reality, of an economic recession will no doubt affect consumer spending on electronics, as most consumers will be driven more toward paying down existing debts, or else investing or saving any extra income rather than purchasing any replacement electronics.
Consumer electronics is an extremely broad market area, consisting of digital audio and video, digital televisions, STBs and PVRs, digital imaging, gaming consoles, appliances, and so on. Historically, demand for consumer electronics has resembled a linear trend over time. However, over the past several years, there have been several products in the market that have been trending exponentially.
Products like flat panel digital televisions, personal video recorders, and digital cameras and camcorders are expected to experience the strongest revenue and shipments growth over the next five years.
The total market is expected to grow in value from $384 billion in 2008 to $625 billion by the end of the forecast period.
Consumer semiconductor revenue is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10 percent through year 2013. There are several products that are growing exponentially and helping to sustain this market. Databeans is expecting consumer semiconductor revenue of $59 billion for 2008, with revenue share of 22 percent in terms of the overall semiconductor market.
