Among the major market segments, wireless semiconductors represent the greatest opportunity for revenue growth, as suppliers meet the needs of emerging products in mobile handset, infrastructure, short-range, and other related applications.
Wireless mobile phones in particular contribute a majority share of revenue to this industry. All evidence points to continuing high demand for mobile phones, especially from the emerging markets of the world. Consumers are also adopting new phone functionalities and wanting more, and this is true especially in Japan and in Europe. Databeans estimates that worldwide mobile handset revenue will approach $142 billion for this year, and then continue growth of 7 percent on average per year.
Databeans estimates that total handset shipments will exceed 1.3 billion units for this year. In terms of units shipped, this is the largest "consumer electronics" market in the world. Databeans estimates that the current worldwide installed base for mobile base stations will increase from about 409,000 today to over 617,000 over the five years.
Aside from wireless handsets and infrastructure, expect solid growth as well in the area of short-range wireless, and in other wireless applications such as cordless phones and in automotive telematics. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are still growing strong, and newer technologies, such as NFC and WiMAX continue to show great promise for the future.
