There is a definite trend toward someday replacing the quartz crystal timing devices in use, which currently are the majority share of the timing market. The crystal alternatives currently being developed include devices based upon CMOS and MEMS technologies. However, so far, CMOS and MEMS devices have all experienced obstacles and limitations in the quest toward being able to replace crystal devices entirely in timing functions.
System support integrated circuits are supporting circuits required in electronics that use a dedicated processor. Timing circuits are included in this market along with memory controllers and I/O controllers. This market currently ships around 2 billion units annually, with a resulting market value of $4.6 billion. Databeans expects a market worth $7.4 billion by 2013, assuming a yearly growth rate of 10 percent on average.
The clock generation and distribution market is growing faster than any other segment in the system support market, mostly due to significant demand in the consumer and communications segments. ASPs in this can market run anywhere from $0.60 to over $100.00 for a single device, depending upon the application and the sophistication of designs.
Databeans estimates that Timing device revenue will reach $4.1 billion total for this year. This market value could exceed $5.7 billion by the end of the forecast period. Integrated circuits make up 43 percent of the total timing device market, with 2008 revenue estimated at $1.7 billion. Growing at a compound annual growth rate of 11 percent each year, this market should reach nearly $3 billion by 2013.
