The memory market is currently valued at an estimated $61.8 billion for 2008, which constitutes about 23 percent of the total semiconductor industry. This particular market has been considered one of the bellwethers of semiconductor health, along with the PC microprocessor market, and to a lesser extent the mobile phone processor market. However, this market can be unpredictable with a short list of suppliers participating and volatile pricing.
In 2007, memory pricing fell dramatically. This was especially true toward the beginning of the year when pricing on DRAM and NAND Flash memory fell by approximately 50 percent. There was an issue of excess inventory that came as a result of an industry buildup toward the release of the Microsoft Vista operating system, and the anticipation of increasing demand coming from consumer electronics and mobile phones.
Memory pricing had a huge impact on the overall semiconductor industry in 2007, which wound up with growth at only 3 percent as declining prices in memory knocked the wind out of the overall market sails. Overall memory pricing dropped 25 percent in 2007.
