Growth Predicted for Automotive and Industrial Segments this Year

The industrial and automotive markets are driving demand for analog and microcontroller products this year. Databeans has recently released five new trackers covering the automotive semiconductor market, the industrial semiconductor market, analog, performance analog, and microcontrollers.

The microcontroller market is dominated by the automotive and industrial segments. Combined, these two markets constitute 87 percent of worldwide revenue for these processors. Both markets are expected to experience recovery in 2016 so the revenue for worldwide microcontrollers is expected to reach a high of nearly $17 billion.

Overall, the automotive market segment is expected to reach close to $30 billion and is growing at a compound annual growth rate slightly higher than the overall semiconductor market. This may come as a surprise for some, but really, opportunities in electronics for this very mature application market are growing strongly. Increasing demand for safety electronics as well as convenience and comfort electronics in midrange and low end vehicles has provided increasing opportunity for suppliers that provide semiconductors suited for automotive designs.

The industrial semiconductor market is roughly $38 billion worldwide. Included in this market are applications in test and measurement, process control, medical, and military or aerospace. The market is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 7 percent and this year is expected to grow by 5 percent.  The industrial market continues to drive demand for both general purpose analog as well as high performance products.

The analog IC market is expected to reach close to $50 billion this year and due to the high demand for signal conditioning, power management, data conversion, and interface.  This market is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 10 percent per year. During the first quarter, the analog market outperformed the overall semiconductor market. Performance analog includes products that are designed to be higher speed, higher resolution, or provide application designs with high efficiency power conversion. Products include high speed or precision amplifiers, high speed interface, high speed and high resolution data conversion products and high efficiency power management. Also included are high speed special purpose transceivers, amplifiers, and interface used in application specific designs such as wireless and wired communications or the industrial application market. The high performance analog market outperformed overall analog in 2015 and is expected to do so again this year with a predicted market value of $15.5 billion.
